What I want to happen in the upcoming mid-term elections, Part I
October 22nd 2006 20:02
I hope the Republicans retain control of the House and the Senate in next month’s mid-term elections. There, I said it.
Before you question my sanity, let me outline my reasoning for you.
Do the Republicans DESERVE to maintain control of the House and the Senate? I say no. Speaking as a conservative, I am disappointed that they have all but abandoned conservative values. They have mismanaged the war and seem content to stick with a strategy for winning that isn’t working. They are beholden more to their big-money donors than they are to their constituents. Despite having control of the presidency, the House, and the Senate, they have mustered very little meaningful legislation. They have been spending our tax dollars like a 1972 Vega burns motor oil. They have been involved in real and alleged corruption and cover-ups and are clearly not capable of self-policing themselves. The bottom line is that they have disappointed and often enraged both conservatives and liberals and do NOT deserve to win in November.
With that being said, however, do the Democrats deserve to take control because of the ineffectiveness or corruption of the Republicans? Again, for me, the answer is no. I don’t have a problem with most Democrats. However, the ones controlling the party now do not have the answers. Think about who are the senior members of and the leadership for the Democratic Party. This list includes Ted Kennedy, Nancy Pelosi, Charles Rangel, John Conyers, and Harry Reid. Those aren’t straw men (or straw women) that I’m throwing out. They are the ones who will take control and make the calls if the Democrats become the majority party in the House and the Senate. Many of the Democrats in Washington have been there a long time and were there back when the Democrats were the majority party in their respective chambers of Congress. They had a chance to govern and we saw that they also were subject to scandals, corruption, and ineffectiveness. We’ll just be trading one ineffective party for another if the Democrats take control.
So when comparing the track records of the two parties, neither side seems very palatable. It really comes down to choosing the lesser of two evils (as usual). The question now is: Who is the lesser of these two evils?
In my next post, I’ll actually give you some reasons to get motivated enough to vote for the Republicans – especially if you’re a conservative.
