Unity? Independence?
July 1st 2008 01:36
Last Friday, Barack Obama held a joint appearance with Hillary Clinton in Unity, New Hampshire. They met to publicly show their unity after a bruising Democratic Primary.
Today, Barack Obama gave a pre-July-4th speech about patriotism in Independence, Missouri. How fitting. As we're about to celebrate our nation's independence, Obama puts in an appearance in a city named Independence.
What do you think? Do you like the little geographical game of symbolism that Obama is playing? Or is he being too clever by half? The appearance with Hillary on a stage in Unity was neat enough, I thought. Apparently, it's going to be an ongoing theme, though. We don't need symbolism and playful little games from a president. We need someone who is serious about the nation's problems. He should drop the wordplay and just start talking about concrete plans he has to help our nation.
If he insists on continuing his slick trek across America's most appropriate placenames, however, maybe he should add these to the list:
* He could give a speech about his relationship with controversial supporters such as Rev. Jeremiah Wright and Bill Ayers. Where should he give it? How about Embarrass, Wisconsin? That should pass his witticism test.
* How about a speech that would better explain his rationale for breaking his promise to use public financing? I didn't buy his first explanation. He could give the speech in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico.
* Finally, I'd like to hear him expound more on his views of working-class voters in Appalachia -- the ones he accused of clinging to guns and their religion. I'd like to know why he thinks so little of that huge swath of hard-working Americans. I have the perfect location for that speech: Why, Arizona.
What do you think, Senator Obama? How about adding those to your itinerary?

Of course, McCain is a disgusting option, too. I wish we had some decent choices this year. It'll be another "lesser of two evils" election.
