The Herminator

October 6th 2011 05:39
I like Herman Cain. I used to listen to him on his nightly talk-radio show here in Georgia. Even back then, I thought he would make a good candidate for president. He decided to run and I've been following his candidacy closely.

Folks refer to him as "the pizza guy" and make jokes about his background. This man's resume is impressive, though. The others who are running -- including the empty suit in the White House -- are all much less accomplished than the Herminator. Here is some of what he's done:

* He graduated from Morehouse College with a degree in mathematics in 1967.
* He earned his Master’s degree in computer science from Purdue University while working full-time developing fire control systems for ships and fighter planes for the Department of the Navy.
* He worked as a computer systems analyst for the Coca-Cola Company.
* He rose to the position of Vice President at the Pillsbury Company.
* He became the regional vice president of Pillsbury’s Burger King division and was assigned to lead a low performing region of 450 of their restaurants. Within three years, it became the best performing region in the company.
* He became the President and CEO of Godfather’s Pizza, a company that was teetering on the edge of bankruptcy. In just 14 months, Herman returned Godfather’s to profitability, and he led his management team to a buyout of the company.
* He was named the President of the National Restaurant Association. Under his administration, the group grew significantly and began to lobby for the interests of America’s restaurateurs and small business owners.
* He was chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.
* He hosted "The Herman Cain Show” on Atlanta’s WSB 750 AM/95.5 FM.

Herman came from a working-class background and he excelled in a number of different roles. Based on his resume, you can see that he is a turnaround artist and a problem-solver. He is the anti-Obama in almost every conceivable way. Also, Herman is a cancer survivor whose faith is central to his life. When he speaks, he displays a level of optimism about and pride in the country that is rare in this era of pessimism and cynicism.

Finally, it should be noted that Herman is not a politician. He has never held political office. When asked about that, he states that Washington is full of politicians and asks where that has gotten us. The fact that he isn't a politician is one of his main selling points to me. He's the ultimate outsider -- and that appeals to me as a conservative voter who has a healthy level of contempt for both parties.

Dennis Miller, the comedian, is sold on Herman Cain. He even offered to write some slogans for the Herminator. Should Herman win the GOP nomination, he suggested this gem:

"Cain vs. Un-Able"

I don't know for certain if I'll wind up voting for Herman Cain. He's at the top of my list right now, though. More than anything, I want someone who can beat Obama. If things work out, though, that person will be the Herminator. If so, I'll be thrilled to pull that lever and put a true problem-solver in the White House.

I've been watching Herman Cain since day one in this campaign, PopCon. Even the conservative pundits are saying he can't win. However, the more I hear him speak and watch him being interviewed, the more the pundits sound foolish. What this country needs right now is a problem solver, a common sense American patriot.

Each of the other candidates has political baggage or has been damaged by the media. As far as I can tell the only "real" thing Mr. Cain is low on is international politics. A running mate like Bolton would put that concern to rest.

Unless he does something really insane or egregious between now and the primary, he has my vote.

"Go, Hermanator!"

Like I mentioned in another post, SL -- I'm tired of the GOP strategists and Fox News commentators and the big-money GOP donors telling us who we have to go with. In fact, I'm suspicious when someone gets pushed on us like that.

Plus, Cain would give the Democrats fits. And Cain would wipe Obama and his teleprompter out in a debate.

Cain seems to be developing Bachmann's penchant for gaffes.

You can't just say anything that enters your head when you run for president.

Yes I think that any one who really wants a job in the country can still get one. But with 9% unemployment that Obama bought and paid for with $4 trillion, I would neither state nor imply that people who do not have a job are lazy or stupid if I was running for president.

Mind you, in the comfort of my own home, I have said such things--but only to my wife...

Yeah, he's not a polished politician yet. I like that about him, but he has to be a little more careful. He has since clarified that statement.

He'll make some gaffes. They all do. With him not being a preened, manufactured politico-bot, I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt in most situations. Of course, Perry pretty much lost me with his "don't have a heart" statement, but immigration is a driving issue for me. Also, Perry is just about too smart alecky and smirky for me. And he comes across as lacking in erudition (if you know what I mean). Mind you, I'd vote for Perry a thousand times in a row over Odumbo, but he's not my first choice.

I think Cain will continue to get better at answering questions. Will he be able to run the gauntlet? We'll see.
