The future of the GOP?
December 14th 2009 07:31
(NOTE: I've been blogging sparsely lately, but will increasingly get back to it after the holidays)
The GOP at the national level is devoid of any real leadership these days. We get the same old tired political arguments from the same old tired politicians. The GOP desperately needs fresh blood. In short, they need their own Barack Obama (except they need someone with substance and actual leadership skills). While I'm always reticent about putting any degree of hope or confidence in a political figure, I have found someone who has piqued my interest. His name is Erick Erickson. He seems to be the genuine article so far. He is about as "grass roots" as someone can get. In case you haven't heard about him yet, here is some information that will let you know what he's all about and the path he's taken:
Confession of a Political Junkie
A Leap of Faith
Georgia political blogger holds nothing back
Being a self-described populist conservative, I especially like this quote from the AJC article:
Erickson has shown a willingness -- even an eagerness -- to push for the retaking of the GOP by (gasp!) conservatives. This is something I applaud wholeheartedly as long as that re-tooling also shakes the GOP free from the monied lobbyists and benefactors who have their own -- and not the country's -- best interests at heart.
Is Erick Erickson the savior of the GOP? I'm not remotely naive enough to put that much faith in any person. However, he is saying and doing things that appeal greatly to people like me. For that reason, I plan to keen eye on Erickson as his political stature continues to grow.

I don’t want to do harm to my own side but just because you have an R after your name doesn’t mean I like you

The Political Brief
Someone with a backbone really has to step up and be the leader America needs, before it's too late.

Angry Electorate
One thing I like about Erickson is that he was a big proponent of the Tea Parties. He believes in the grass roots and seems to have little love for many of the retreads we have in Washington now. He's backing Rubio over Crist in Florida (which I like) and he joined the chorus against the liberal candidate put up by the GOP in that NY Congressional district. Although the conservative didn't win, I appreciated his stand on principle.
I could see Erickson eventually running for president -- although I think he's quite a few years away from that. Still, I applaud him with some trepidation because I almost always get disappointed by politicians. They all talk a good game, but have skeletons falling out of their closets and are -- more often than not -- full of deceit.
