Specter gets kneecapped

May 6th 2009 04:43
From the Washington Post:

In a unanimous voice vote, the Senate approved a resolution that added Specter to the Democratic side of the dais on the five committees on which he serves, an expected move that gives Democrats larger margins on key panels such as Judiciary and Appropriations.

But Democrats placed Specter in one of the two most junior slots on each of the five committees for the remainder of this Congress, which goes through December 2010.

So Specter has lost his seniority after switching to the Democratic Party. Why do bad things happen to good people? Why?? Oh, the humanity!

The article does go on to say that the Dems might revisit this decision after next year's election -- so it's possible that he could regain that seniority. For now, though, Specter has to sit at the kiddie table with the neophytes. Somehow, I don't think this is the kind of welcome Arlen had in mind when he decided to grace the Democratic Party with his presence.

How very sad for poor Arlen. It probably surprised him, too...

Political justice has been served, it's good to know who your friends are.

SL, after his closed-door meetings with Reid and Obama, he was probably expecting roses to be thrown at his feet. Oops.

That's what happens when you trust the wrong people, PopCon. He should have known better... but that would require a thought process, which he clearly doesn't have.

Lester, the only thing that concerns me now is that Specter will now be expected to prove himself to the Dems with his votes. If he lines up like a nice little Democrat and does their bidding, they may give him his seniority back. If he doesn't, they can continue to stonewall him. We'll see what's more important: Specter's proud record of being independent and voting his mind or his love of seniority and power.

Personally, I think his chances of getting re-elected go down by the day. Now, Tom Ridge is thinking of running as a Republican. He could possibly beat Specter. And Specter still may have a challenge from a reputable Democrat in the Democratic primary.
