Racial politics and Ivy League towns

August 6th 2009 07:57
The South always get accused by Northerners of being racially insensitive. However, it seems that a number of Ivy League towns have their own problems with race:

In New Haven, Connecticut (where Yale University is located):

The U.S. Supreme Court ruled Monday that 20 white New Haven firefighters who were denied promotion were victims of illegal racial discrimination.

In Cambridge, Massachusetts (where Harvard University is located):

Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr., one of the nation's pre-eminent African-American scholars, was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home by Cambridge police investigating a possible break-in. The incident raised concerns among some Harvard faculty that Gates was a victim of racial profiling.

In Philadelphia (where the University of Pennsylvania is located):

Amid a storm of racial controversy, a Philadelphia day camp whose children were asked to leave a private suburban swim club have rejected the club's invitation to return and announced plans to sue.

Who knew that Ivy League towns were such racial powder kegs? I hope our friends up north first look in the mirror the next time they feel compelled to accuse the South of being racially intolerant. Racism can be found anywhere and it's disingenuous for anyone to believe that the South has cornered the market on it.

It's like sipping tea, PopCon. A common practice, but in the north they extend their pinky fingers while doing it. On the subject of racism, it's another finger they extend. LOL

I just get sick of the South being the butt of every joke and slur imaginable, SL. We're not perfect, but we're not the knuckle-dragging racists that everyone says we are.

My Pappy was from Texas, PopCon so I'm a Southerner, too, no matter where I live. The Ivy League elitists have more skeletons in their closets than we do, but nobody seems to care.
