Looking ahead to 2008
November 1st 2006 23:07
Okay. I realize that it’s pretty early to be thinking about the 2008 presidential election. Nevertheless, there has already been plenty of talk about who the frontrunners will be. And since it’s election season, I figured I’d take a quick look at some of the possible candidates. Here is the landscape as I see it.
On the Democratic side, it seems that the pundits have all but handed the party's nomination to Hillary Rodham Clinton (D - NY). Personally, I'd rather not see another Clinton or another Bush as president. Those are just two families that our country has had a bellyful of at this point. And Hillary will be especially tough for many voters to accept. She has high negatives and will bring out an army of anti-Hillary voters.
Recently, Barack Obama (D - IL) expressed his possible interest in running in 2008. While I don't know that much about him yet, I do like some of what I know. He seems cerebral, but sincere and respectful. Or, maybe he's just a good actor. I guess we’ll find out soon enough. Of course, you also have Al Gore, John Kerry, and John Edwards to possibly consider (if they do run). They have all lost before, though, and they would not appeal to some broad segments of voters.
On the Republican side, most "experts" say that John McCain is the man to beat. I just don't think he has much of a chance of winning the Republican primary. He's been wishy-washy on too many issues and he is not socially conservative enough to get the nomination. I'm also not very keen on Rudy Giuliani -- he has too much personal baggage and he's too socially liberal. I did like George Allen, but he has completely blown it with some recent gaffes. Mitt Romney is a possibility and is probably my favorite at this point, but I admittedly don't know enough about him yet. I know that he is socially conservative, but he may have some problems in that he is Mormon. It probably shouldn’t matter, but I think it will to some voters.
Those are just my quick thoughts on the field as it stands now. What are your thoughts?
In my next post, I’ll talk more in detail about another candidate who just announced his upcoming plans for 2008.
