Obama, Obama, pants on fire!

March 4th 2009 06:14
Barack Obama has turned his back on one of his biggest campaign promises:

Despite campaign promises to take a machete to lawmakers' pet projects, President Barack Obama is quietly caving to funding nearly 8,000 of them this year, drawing a stern rebuke Monday from his Republican challenger in last fall's election.

Arizona Sen. John McCain said it is "insulting to the American people" for Obama's budget director to indicate over the weekend that the president will sign a $410 billion spending bill with what Republicans critics say is nearly $5.5 billion in pet projects known as earmarks.

I don't want Obama to keep most of his promises. In my opinion, the policies behind those promises will be very destructive for our country. However, I really wanted him to keep this promise. Much of the electorate is sick of these wasteful pet projects. Unfortunately, he is backing down and letting Congress do what they've always done -- waste taxpayer money.

With that being said, Obama's cowardice isn't what infuriates me the most about this pork-laden bill. I expect the Democrats to promote wasteful spending and I'm not surprised Obama is signing off on it. What drives me crazy is the GOP's role in this embarrassment:

House Democrats estimate that Republicans inserted 40 percent of the earmarks in the bill. An independent budget watchdog group, Taxpayers for Common Sense, said the 60-40 Democratic-Republican ratio followed historical patterns.

I was hoping that the GOP got the message after being decimated in the last two elections. Apparently, they still don't have a clue. There are a few voices of sanity on this issue (including John McCain, cited above). However, many in the GOP still waddle up to the trough and feed just like the Dems do. I can't say I'm surprised, but I'm extremely disappointed.

I think that the tax payers have be stabbed in the back by our elected officials from both parties. But now that the dems have complete control they all will spend like drunken sailors.

Lester, the Dems will spend until the country gets sick of it and throw them out. Unfortunately, the GOP seems to love big government as much as the Dems now. It's a race to the bottom.

The earmarks disappoint me too, but would you prefer a government shutdown instead? From what I understand, we were on the verge of that when the bill was signed.

NoaIzumi, they could've passed a short-term funding bill if Obama vetoed the $410 BB bill. In fact, they did. The previous funding only went through Friday. They passed a stopgap spending bill after it didn't get done. Then, this week, they pushed the $410 BB bill through. He should've vetoed it and told them to get the earmarks out -- like he said he would. Then, they should've reduced the total value of the funding bill by at least the amount of those earmarks.
