Obama: Ethics/Schmethics!!
January 27th 2009 05:30
I actually applauded Obama last week for putting in place ethics guidelines that would crack down on the influence of lobbyists in Washington. My new-found (albeit tentative) respect for him was both premature and misplaced. It took about a day for the country to find out that he planned to violate his own directive:
Obama plans to ask for a "waiver" that would allow Lynn to go forward. Not only that, but his spokesman has stated that there could be multiple waivers requested for Obama's picks.
Why bother making laws or rules when you're just going to turn around ignore them? Obama acted in a serious and resolute manner when he signed that executive order last week and he basked in the praise he got for his actions. As is typical of most politicians, though, he's proven himself to be a full-on hypocrite.
Is that "the change we need", Barack? I don't think so.
Former Raytheon lobbyist William Lynn’s nomination to be deputy defense secretary could be in jeopardy, as the powerful chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee vowed on Thursday to dig deeper into the appointment before calling for a committee vote.
The strongly worded statement by Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich.) followed a call by a government watchdog group for President Barack Obama to stand by his tough new lobbying rules and withdraw Lynn’s nomination to avoid compromising the “effectiveness of the Department of Defense.”
