No Newt is good Newt
October 1st 2007 07:47
I see that Newt Gingrich has decided not to run for President in 2008. That's good news. He was only a distraction and he had no chance of winning either the GOP nomination or the Presidency.
Personally, I think that Newt has some really good ideas. He is a great debater and he is not afraid to say the things that many conservatives think. He is willing to challenge the establishment -- and that is a refreshing trait these days. However, Newt also has a bloated ego. I really think that he has sorely missed the spotlight and wanted the media to turn its beacons back on him. We have enough egomaniacs in Washington as it is. We didn't need another one. Also, Newt was the poster child for partisanship when he served in Congress. He lived to vilify and demonize his opponents. And that's something else that we already have plenty of in Washington.
Furthermore, Newt is quite the hypocrite. He was probably the most vocal critic of the Democrats who were caught up in the House check-bouncing scandal in the early 90's. Then, it was revealed that Newt had also bounced a number of checks himself. Also, he vociferously criticized Bill Clinton for his immorality...but we found out recently that Newt was having an affair of his own during that time. And Newt talks about corruption in Washington, but he was fined $300K by the House Ethics Committee after he lied about the role that GOPAC played in a college course he taught. Washington is already full of hypocrisy. We didn't need Newt to load his personal baggage into a U-Haul and move it into the White House.
Did Newt really think that we were waiting with bated breath for him to ride in on his white horse and save the republic? Sure, it would be great for us to have someone we could rally around. However, Newt was not that guy. We all knew it -- and I'm sure he knew it, too.
So mark me down as someone who is glad that Newt's out. I like the man's ideas, but I can't say that I like the man himself. In terms of the 2008 Presidential election, no Newt is good Newt.
