John Ensign should resign

June 21st 2009 04:38
John Ensign (R-NV) should resign. In case you haven't heard, he had an affair with one of his staffers and now he's in finger-pointing mode with the husband of his former mistress.

Why should he resign? Well, it is a fact that we are all human and that humans make mistakes. However, John Ensign signed himself up for a heightened level of scrutiny. When Bill Clinton had his sexual dalliances, Ensign called for his resignation. When Larry Craig did his toe-tapping search for a mating partner in an airport bathroom, Ensign said that a Craig resignation would be best for the GOP. Now, Ensign has laid bare his own sexual failings. He set up this standard for himself. Now, he has glaringly failed to meet that standard. If he doesn't step down, he will be displaying an acute and tin-eared case of hypocrisy.

Do the right thing, Senator Ensign. Call for your own resignation...and answer that call by stepping down.

Having lived in Nevada for many years, PopCon, I had many occasions to be in contact with John Ensign. Until he signed onto the TARP trash, I had a great deal of respect for him. I thought he should have resigned for betraying the country... like all the other idiots who sold us.

His infidelity was just plain stupid. It always is. But then starting a bid for the White House with it hanging over his head proves that his judgment is not terrific. If he were a Democrat, being a cheater would be a resume' enhancer, but for a Republican it's just the opposite.

He is a public figure and should do the right thing, as well as the other Congressmen, and women. But if everyone one of them would do the right thing and resign when they do something unethical, or deceitful they all would be out of work, and then maybe we could elect some real countrymen that have this nation's best interest at heart, not just their own political gain.

I agree with Lester's comment. I do not think our founding fathers envisioned career politicians and the damage they do as the sink into the Washington political muck.

I didn't know that much about him before this episode, SL, but he seemed to be a pretty good conservative. However, he brought this shame on himself with his infidelities. If the GOP starts back with this nonsense, they could blow their chance to regain House and Senate seats in 2010. Liberal voters don't seem to have a problem with such behavior, but conservative voters expect more of their elected officials.

From your lips to God's ears, Lester.

I agree, rick. I think most politicians have good intentions when they go to Washington, but they get up there and blend right into a corrupt system. It must be something in the water.

I think so too PopCon. To me, the current situation in Washington is just cause for term limits ... I think eight years but would settle for twelve. We should not have to worry about an incoming administration stampeding our Congress. I really think that is what Obama and Emmanuel are doinig now ... getting all they can, while they can, before the sitting Dems get too worried about their status in the 2010 elections because Obama's coat tails are going to start getting mighty slippery as he continues to loose public support. One of these days I want to do some research into our founding fathers. I am curious about their vocations and how that might have helped shape our Constitution. And I wonder how many were lawyers ... I think there are too many of those in Washington now. Too many or our officials are more concerned about grabbing power than they are about trying to do the next right thing.

We're simpatico, Rick. I'm a big advocate of term limits. I think twelve years total is more than enough (six House terms or two Senate terms or some mix with a max of twelve years).

Yes, Obama is trying to get what he can now. When 2010 gets here, folks (especially Dems) will be less likely to take risks and will be looking to preserve their jobs.

I think our founding fathers would roll over in their graves if they saw the number of career politicians we have now in Washington. I fully believe that they intended for Americans to go to Washington and serve the country for a while and then go back home to their given trades or serve in some other capacity. Today, too many people in Washington have politics as their trade.

Yes, Ensign should resign Now! However, being the hypocrite that he is, you know he won't. He points fingers at others but never at himself. Being from NV I can tell you that his convern has never been for the people of NV, just for himself and the party.

As far as term limits, we already have term limits, they're called elections. It's up to the people to get more involved, do research on your own, don't listen to the 30 second sound bites.

Vegasguy, do you think he will get re-elected? Folks keep saying that Nevada voters don't care much about personal dalliances and that Nevada Republicans are mostly libertarian (live and let live). I guess that makes sense in a state centered around gambling and with legalized prostitution. Still, you have to wonder how forgiving people really are. If Ensign was in my state (Georgia), I don't think he'd have a shot of getting re-elected. Republicans here don't "cotton" to that kind of behavior from elected officials.

It's up to the people to get more involved, do research on your own, don't listen to the 30 second sound bites.

It'll never happen. That's why we need term limits. Folks are just apathetic and/or uninformed and that'll never change -- no matter how much you or I want it to.
