Jeb's not running

January 7th 2009 03:11
Whew! That was a close one. Jeb Bush has decided NOT to run for the Senate seat being vacated by Mel Martinez (R-FL). As I've said before, we need to move beyond the Clintons and the Bushes. I don't want anything to happen that will get Jeb or any other Bush offspring on a path that could lead to the White House. Sadly for Jeb, he may be the most capable of the Bushes. However, eight less-than-stellar years from Dubya have badly damaged the Bush brand. Hopefully, the window for Jeb will close now that he has opted against running for the Senate. I hope Jeb finds his calling and lives happily ever after. I just don't want that calling to be one of public service on the national stage. It's time to give other folks -- and families -- a chance.

I am glad that he didn't choose to run either, but he is more qualified to be president than Obama. I know Bush made many mistakes, but not everything can be blamed on him there is enough blame to go around.

I oppose Bushes and Clintons (and Kennedys, for that matter) largely on principle. It's ridiculous that so few people wield so much power in this country. With regard to Bush specifically, not everything can be blamed on Bush. However, the buck stops at the White House, fair or not. I don't see how any president could preside over a more disastrous eight years than what we're left with post-Bush.

Obama is still largely an unknown quantity in terms of what he'll do as president. I don't think he should've been president because of that, but he may be a good (or a bad) president. I do think he is very liberal, but we'll have to see how he actually governs.

Jeb Bush was a great governor of Florida, PopCon, and a hundred times more qualified than B.O. (B.S.). That being said, I must agree with you that some families wield too much political power. Just when we though we could recover from Clinton fatigue, here comes Hillary again. She ought to go home and bake a nice batch of salt-peter cookies for her adoring hubby. The worst dynastic disasters are, of course the Kennedy's. Just when we think Teddy might retire, here comes Caroline.

I have two main problems with Jeb -- and both of them are unforgivable. One is the aristocracy/nepotism thing (as I've mentioned). My other HUGE problem with him is that he is an unrelenting proponent of amnesty and comprehensive immigration reform. For that reason, I'm thrilled that he's not running. It'll be hard enough to hold ground against comprehensive immigration reform with the bunch of weaselly Republicans we have now. Adding another Republican squish just sends us that much closer to amnesty. Mel Martinez was pro-amnesty. We need to flip that seat to an opponent of amnesty and open borders.

Can't argue with that, PopCon. We don't need more politicians that don't care about our borders! Why I said Jeb was a good governor, was that he had measures in place when Florida was hit with hurricanes and their damage was so much less than Louisiana (especially New Orleans). He understood planning and preparation very well. I also liked the way he tried to keep Terri Schaivo from being murdered. Remember, Florida doesn't have the same immigration problems the rest of the country does. His only illegal immigrants came from Cuba and could be sent back with the "wet foot, dry foot" law. He didn't have to deal with the results of a few hundred thousand illegals destroying his economy.

I've got a cousin in Tampa and she said that they are absolutely overrun with illegal aliens. It used to be mostly Cubans, but she said they are swamped with non-Cubans now, as well. That's just Tampa, but I imagine it's the same in other parts of the state.

I'm sure Jeb did some good things, but his stance on amnesty and the borders negates any good he did. We have a ticking time bomb here with our border situation. Pretty soon, we won't have a country worth saving from tornadoes.

Ann Coulter's right, PopCon! We should build the border fence and have the illegals build it for minimum wage. On the last day they all have to return to their own side of the border! Then we pay welfare recipients to cememt in all the tunnels for their monthly checks.

I'm all for the border fence, but we wouldn't necessarily need it if we did workplace enforcement. Every employer should be required to use eVerify. It's 99.5% effective. It would stop illegal immigration dead in its tracks. There's a reason that the amnesty proponents want to kill it. It works like gangbusters, so they can't stand it.
