Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin
September 13th 2008 22:10
Over the last couple of weeks, I've often wondered how Hillary Clinton felt about Sarah Palin being named as the GOP VP candidate. After losing a contentious fight against Obama for the top spot on the Democratic ticket, Hillary also was snubbed for the number two spot when Obama chose Biden for his VP. Since then, there has been continued talk about animosity between Obama and the Clintons. Also, I certainly haven't seen Hillary champing at the bit to stump for Obama. She's doing the bare minimum (if that) she has to do to satiate her critics. Keeping all that in mind, my guess is that Hillary is pretty happy about Palin being named the VP on the GOP ticket. Here are the three main reasons why I feel that way:
* Hillary cares about seeing women succeed -- Certainly, Hillary and Sarah Palin do not agree on many (if any) issues. However, Palin has a chance to do become the VP and that is something no other woman has ever done. I'm sure Hillary would rather see a Democrat be the first to break that barrier, but I still think she would be happy to see it happen...regardless of the party.
* Seeing Palin energize the GOP is a constant reminder to Obama that he may have made a huge mistake by choosing Biden instead of her for the VP slot -- Palin seems to think that's the case. Biden seems to agree. If McCain wins and Palin is thought to be the difference-maker, we will hear the loudest unstated "I told you so" in history.
* Finally, and most importantly, Palin could give Hillary her best shot at winning the presidency in 2012 -- If Palin can help McCain win, Hillary has a good shot at being the Democratic nominee in 2012 against a McCain-Palin ticket. However, if Obama wins, he will surely be the Democratic nominee in 2012 and Hillary would have to wait until 2016 for another shot at the presidency. She's 60 years old now, so sooner is much better than later for Hillary.
I don't think we'll see Hillary heaping praise on Palin. She still has to toe the line for the Democrats. However, I suspect she's smiling on the inside. And in the friendly confines of the Clinton home, there may even be an ever-so-faint chant of "Go, Sarah, go".

If Biden can just hold in there a few more days it maybe to late for Hillary to stop the momentum of Palin if she was to replace Biden.
