GOP mired in g-o-o-p

May 14th 2008 21:48
Yesterday, a special election was held in Mississippi to determine who would complete Roger Wicker's (R-MS) term in the House. Wicker took over for Trent Lott when Lott resigned from the Senate. This district is a very red district in a very red state. Losing it would be a warning signal of Noah-like proportions for the GOP. What happened?

With all precincts reporting, the Democratic nominee, Prentiss County Chancery Clerk Travis Childers, defeated Republican Greg Davis, 54 to 46 percent. Childers was able to expand his three-point margin of victory from the race's first round of balloting last month -- even as he faced an onslaught of Republican attacks.

This was not an anomaly. At this point, it's a trend -- and a BAD trend for the GOP. Needless to say, the GOP higher-ups are apoplectic:

The victory marks the Democrats’ third straight special election pickup in three months. It will be a serious blow to the Republican Party’s already-flagging morale and will surely prompt a new round of finger-pointing among the already fractured GOP caucus.

"This loss is going to prompt serious introspection by our conference to figure out what went wrong and how to fix it," said a GOP leadership aide. "We have time to do that, and we will if we learn our lessons leading into November. But the next couple of days are not going to be pretty."

And it's not like the GOP didn't try to win this one:

The $1.27 million that the NRCC spent in the heavily Republican district amounted to nearly 20 percent of the committee's entire cash-on-hand.

Folks, the GOP is in TROUBLE. Honestly, I don't think they can do anything at this point to stop the freight train that is coming. Barring some type of miracle, November will be a bloodletting for the Republicans. Seeing as they haven't really done anything or stood for anything in a long time, they will only have themselves to blame when it happens.

The big mistake the Republicans have been making is trying to "compromise" with the libs/dems instead of standing up and speaking up. Even Pres. Bush is guilty of lowering his standards and kissing a little lib/dem booty. McCain has become a champion at it. He can't seem to find a lib/dem cause he won't support or a conservative one that he will. It's a sad commentary, especially considering how well Ronald Reagan did by "sticking to his guns" and more recently Bobby Jindall becoming governor or Louisiana by standing firmly on conservative values. Where do some of these people get the idea that they have to join the opposition in order to win? It's insane!

When the Republicans were in control of the House and Senate they did nothing, they didn't fight for us they let us down when it came to energy policies.

If they had done the right thing oil would be flowing from Anwar, oil would be flowing from off shore east coast and west coast. And maybe we would be exploring the large shale deposits out west.

But they gave in to the dems, and now look what we have. The Republican only acted like dems now we will have the real thing, and it can only get worse from here. Because no one can be as stupid as a liberal dem.

I agree, SL. Some argue that the GOP needs to move to the center (McCain being the model). That's ridiculous. The GOP is where they are because they forsook almost all conservative ideals. When you add the war and the bad economy and ongoing scandals on top of that, the GOP is on life support.

The scary thing, Lester, is that the Dems could get a filibuster-proof majority in the Senate. If that happens, they can pass everything they've ever dreamed of passing. As I often say, the Republicans deserve to lose. It's just that the Democrats don't deserve to win. The approval rating of the Democratically-controlled Congress is even lower than the approval rating of GWB.

It'll never happen, but term limits could clear out the deadwood. We need almost complete turnover. There's a good article on RedState about the GOP dilemma (replete with Biblical chastisement). You may enjoy it. I think the guy quoting from Revelations in the comments was spot on.
