Geithner should get the boot
January 23rd 2009 07:20
It appears that Timothy Geithner will soon be confirmed as our new Treasury Secretary. Folks on Capitol Hill have been raving about his qualifications for the job. However, Geithner is a tax cheat:
You could argue, as he does, that it was an oversight on his part. Why, then, did he only pay the entirety of his back taxes after Obama nominated him?
This is an insult to the American people. As Treasury Secretary, Geithner would oversee the IRS. A few years ago, Linda Chavez had to withdraw from consideration as Labor Secretary after it was discovered that she had hired an illegal immigrant as her maid. Her withdrawal was the right move. Why should we entrust the Labor Department to a woman who can't even abide by our nation's labor laws? Well, this is no different. How we can entrust oversight of the IRS to a man who is a tax cheat? It's a joke that he was even considered. With his background, he couldn't even get HIRED by the IRS. Now he'll be overseeing that agency? That makes a lot of sense, right?
President Obama, you have really disappointed me with your defense of Timothy Geithner. His failure to pay his taxes is not insignificant, as you have stated. In your campaign, you promised to bring "the change we need". Well, this is not the change we need. This is just more of the same. If this is the kind of leadership we can expect from you, then our country is truly in big trouble.
The committee vote came a day after Geithner appeared before the panel to apologize for what he called "careless mistakes" in failing to pay $34,000 in taxes earlier in the decade, when he worked at the International Monetary Fund.

Geithner paid the back taxes plus interest for the years 2003 and 2004 after being audited by the Internal Revenue Service. But he did not pay taxes he owed for 2001 and 2002, even though he had made the same mistakes for those years, until shortly before he was nominated by Obama last November to be treasury secretary.
