Election day

November 3rd 2008 22:12
Tomorrow is election day. If you believe most of the media, it's pretty much a done deal -- Obama will win. I'm not as certain as the media that it's over, but I do think Obama will win. John McCain has just had too big of a hill to climb this year. We should know tomorrow, though -- assuming, of course, that the lawyers for either side don't start playing their election games.

With that being said, my biggest concern right now is the Senate. The Democrats currently have 51 votes in the Senate. If they can get to 60, this country is in big trouble. That would provide a filibuster-proof majority and the Democrats would be able to push through whatever their hearts desire. That could include odious and irresponsible spending programs, ultra-liberal judges, and rule-changing bills to irreversibly cement the actions that they put in place. It's scary. I'm no fan of gridlock, but I'm also no fan of unimpeded, one-party rule. About half the country (or more) is conservative. For the Democrats to usher in a new era of ultra-liberal policies would be unconscionable. Note that the Democrats wouldn't even have to get to 60 to implement some unsavory policies. That's because they can always count on a few of the "moderate" Republicans to side with them. Similarly, though, they can't always count on their own members to toe the party line. Quite a few of the Democrats are from conservative states and those Senators would be ill-advised to march blindly to the beat of Harry Reid's drum.

So we'll see what happens tomorrow. Like many conservatives, I'm no fan of the GOP right now. They've failed miserably over the last few years. However, the Democrats do not deserve to be given the unmitigated mandate they may receive. My hope is that the GOP will clearly get the message tomorrow that they need to start over and rebuild the party. However, I hope that message doesn't also provide the Democrats with the ability to turn this country into a quasi-socialist, hyper-liberal state. That's not what the people of the US want.

Not what we want and certainly not what we need, PopCon. Tomorrow is going to be momentous no matter what happens. I sort of expect the worst (B.O. winning) but am still praying for the best (McCain/Palin victory).

If B.O. wins we conservatives can expect an avalanche of ugliness and bragging from the left. It still won't make them right.

May God protect America from it's own foolishness.

Like you, I don't expect them to be gracious winners, SL. And that's unfortunate.

Fot the Democrats to be gracious winners or losers would be a first, PopCon. Sad but true...

Lester, I just hope the GOP finally starts to "get it". You would think that the beatdown they took in 2006 would've straightened them out, but it didn't. They need to dump a lot of the deadweight. They've had too many career politicians in the GOP. Some of them are finally retiring (like John Warner) and some are getting convicted (like Ted Stevens). They need new blood and new ideas. And they need to start caring more about the middle class folks than they do about Wall Street.

I think a majority in the Senate is a good thing - but that's probably because I'm from Canada, where the Prime Minister *usually* has enough seats to push through his own legislation.

It has its downsides, but the positive effect is that they have enough power to get things done... this financial crisis needs some swift action.

The problem is, Cibbuano, that if Obama wins and has everything his way, he'll only make things worse. It was him and his Democrat friends that caused the crisis to begin with. All their blame shifting isn't going to solve anything. And giving them absolute power is a fatal mistake.

I'm in favor of getting things done, Cibbuano. The problem, though, is that Obama was the most liberal Senator in 2007. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid was the 9th most liberal Senator (out of 100). House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is one of the most liberal members of the House. They would set the agenda for the country, but they are all from the extreme left. Action based on compromise is good. Action forced on the country by the far left is not good.

I would not like to see Either party get as much power as the Democrats may end up with. They will ruin the country and still spin it to blame somebody else for what they do.

I agree, Randy. Maybe it won't be a complete washout for the GOP. I'm hopeful, but I'm not optimistic.
