Democratic hypocrisy

February 1st 2009 05:55
There's another tax cheat in Obama's cabinet. I'm shocked -- SHOCKED, I tell you. This time it's Tom Daschle. In a rushed attempt to avoid jeopardizing his ticket on the gravy train, he has made arrears by paying $150K in back taxes. Obama can certainly pick 'em, can't he?

Surely, the Democrats, who were infuriated and disgusted by the supposed scofflaws in Bush's cabinet, are calling for Daschle to step down. Right?

Wrong:

Four prominent Democratic Senators spoke out Saturday in support of former Sen. Tom Daschle, whose tax records have come under scrutiny as he pursues a Cabinet position in the administration of President Barack Obama.

That's right. They're defending his actions vigorously. How totally unsurprising. As we know, IOKIYAD. They're in charge now, so they get to make (and change...and bend...and break) the rules.

If Obama TRULY wanted to change things in Washington, he'd start demanding at least SOME level of integrity from his party and his inner circle. He's not doing that, though. As a result, he's burning through that political capital faster than a wildfire across an drought-ravaged forest.

Good grief. It's going to be a LONG four years.

A very long four years, PopCon. Imagine if a Republican pulled anything like what B.O. (B.S.) has done just so far! The media just keeps drooling, slobbering and covering up for everything he does. Wonder how long it'll last before they turn on him?

Hi there,

It was shocking and disappointing, to say the least. The Republicans have promised a vigorous vetting process. But, Daschle should have known better--yes supposedly Daschle's Accountant saw the mistake. But, 150,000 is a big number in my view to overlook.

You're right, SL. The Democrats would be screaming like wild banshees if these were Republicans. It's absolutely infuriating.

The truth, though, is that Obama will get a lot of leeway if he turns around the economy. Most of these absolutely hypocritical actions will be overlooked (unfortunately) if things get better. If not, though, this will just be kindling for a fire of fury among the electorate.

Mike, I think you meant to say Democrats. These are all Dems (not that the GOP was much better, if any, when they were in power).

Daschle should've known better. However, the buck stops with Obama. He's the one who promised honesty and ethical behavior. Yet he defends Geithner and Daschle and all those "waivers" he's requested to bypass HIS OWN RULES with regard to hiring lobbyists. This is on Obama. He could've and should've done the right thing and he should've cut Geithner and Daschle loose. The fact that he forced Bill Richardson to step down makes we wonder how atrocious Richardson's nefarious activities were. Clearly, Obama has a high tolerance for unethical behavior amongst his inner circle. Richardson clearly exceeded that (high) level.

And keep this in mind, Mike. Daschle knew about the "mistake" months ago. It was only when he was nominated for HHS that he decided to make it right. That's exactly what Geithner did.

It's absolutely unbelievable.

I'm starting to realize something, though. It's no wonder that the Dems are fine with raising people taxes. It won't affect them because they don't pay their taxes.

It's the infamous "two sets of rules", PopCon. The Democrats hold themselves to no standards whatever and the rest of us to very high standards. It happens every time. Look at Bill (the Zipper) and everything he did.

I doubt that Richardson was more involved in criminality than the rest of them, he just backed off rather than be front page news. Personally, I like Richardson a whole lot better than the rest of the rabble that B.O. (B.S.) has put into his cabinet of criminals. He'll get what he paid for, sooner or later they'll embarrass him big time. Maybe even before he does it to himself.

Hey PopulistConservative , it's true they are hypocrites, and what's worse is the Press is not going nuts, like they would if it was a republican.

SL, I do think Richardson was dirty. Besides the pay-to-play stuff (which got lots of attention with Blagojevich), I read that he a known sexual harasser when he was governor of Nevada. Allegedly, he had been making inappropriate comments (and more?) to women for years. I just think there was more to the story if Obama was willing to run him off.

Lester, you're right. The stories have been in the news in passing, but I haven't seen journos really holding them accountable and asking the tough questions about Obama's judgment and the Dems' hypocrisy. I guess they're still in the honeymoon period with the Democrats.

I don't recall Bill Richardson being governor of Nevada, PopCon. Must have been before I moved here... If he did something worse than being a tax cheat, B.O. (B.S.) should have known before he appointed him, wouldn't ya think? But then B.O. (B.S.) seems to have an affinity for criminals... birds of a feather, and all...

Oops. I meant New Mexico. And, yes, The Almighty O should've known before he nominated him. So much for that vaunted vetting process.

Vetting schmetting, PopCon. Even if they are unacceptable to everyone else, B.O. (B.S.) gets them approved. I still don't understand why Richardson was eliminated so fast. Others have done some pretty bad stuff and been approved.

Hi there everyone,

Sorry for the lateness in resposnding.

I indeed noted Democrats. Although the accountant supposedly picked up the error, it is still a profound oversight in my view. I think he will be confirmed due to the historical precendence in confirming the President's nominees. Daschle should have known better, in my view.

B.O. (B.S.) might have given a moments thought to the integrity of his selections after all the "change" trash. Anyone who believed him is now finding out what he really meant. I wonder how long his adoring minions will continue to support him.

Team,

Sorry to yet again clarify... The democractic vetting process did fail...although Daschle told the white house and fixed it, still he should have known better. When I wrote Republicans, I meant the fact that they have to be the loyal opposition. I think that if they think Tom Daschle is not qualified and there are questions about him, they ought to fillisbuster it if they think it is appropriate. As I said though, I think he will be confirmed based on the President's desire and how the Senate is. Although the Senate did turn on John Tower.....so there is precendence.

Let's see how it turns out.

Mike, I think he'll get in. Senators don't like to reject one of the own. And the GOP just doesn't have the numbers to block him anyway when you consider that several Republicans are moderates who vote with the Dems as much as they vote with the GOP.

This kind of bad judgment and hypocrisy is just chipping away at Obama's mystique, though. He promised change, but it looks like business as usual to me.
