Democratic hypocrisy
February 1st 2009 05:55
There's another tax cheat in Obama's cabinet. I'm shocked -- SHOCKED, I tell you. This time it's Tom Daschle. In a rushed attempt to avoid jeopardizing his ticket on the gravy train, he has made arrears by paying $150K in back taxes. Obama can certainly pick 'em, can't he?
Surely, the Democrats, who were infuriated and disgusted by the supposed scofflaws in Bush's cabinet, are calling for Daschle to step down. Right?
Wrong:
That's right. They're defending his actions vigorously. How totally unsurprising. As we know, IOKIYAD. They're in charge now, so they get to make (and change...and bend...and break) the rules.
If Obama TRULY wanted to change things in Washington, he'd start demanding at least SOME level of integrity from his party and his inner circle. He's not doing that, though. As a result, he's burning through that political capital faster than a wildfire across an drought-ravaged forest.
Good grief. It's going to be a LONG four years.

Wrong:
Four prominent Democratic Senators spoke out Saturday in support of former Sen. Tom Daschle, whose tax records have come under scrutiny as he pursues a Cabinet position in the administration of President Barack Obama.

It was shocking and disappointing, to say the least. The Republicans have promised a vigorous vetting process. But, Daschle should have known better--yes supposedly Daschle's Accountant saw the mistake. But, 150,000 is a big number in my view to overlook.

The truth, though, is that Obama will get a lot of leeway if he turns around the economy. Most of these absolutely hypocritical actions will be overlooked (unfortunately) if things get better. If not, though, this will just be kindling for a fire of fury among the electorate.

Daschle should've known better. However, the buck stops with Obama. He's the one who promised honesty and ethical behavior. Yet he defends Geithner and Daschle and all those "waivers" he's requested to bypass HIS OWN RULES with regard to hiring lobbyists. This is on Obama. He could've and should've done the right thing and he should've cut Geithner and Daschle loose. The fact that he forced Bill Richardson to step down makes we wonder how atrocious Richardson's nefarious activities were. Clearly, Obama has a high tolerance for unethical behavior amongst his inner circle. Richardson clearly exceeded that (high) level.
And keep this in mind, Mike. Daschle knew about the "mistake" months ago. It was only when he was nominated for HHS that he decided to make it right. That's exactly what Geithner did.
It's absolutely unbelievable.
I'm starting to realize something, though. It's no wonder that the Dems are fine with raising people taxes. It won't affect them because they don't pay their taxes.

I doubt that Richardson was more involved in criminality than the rest of them, he just backed off rather than be front page news. Personally, I like Richardson a whole lot better than the rest of the rabble that B.O. (B.S.) has put into his cabinet of criminals. He'll get what he paid for, sooner or later they'll embarrass him big time. Maybe even before he does it to himself.

Sorry for the lateness in resposnding.
I indeed noted Democrats. Although the accountant supposedly picked up the error, it is still a profound oversight in my view. I think he will be confirmed due to the historical precendence in confirming the President's nominees. Daschle should have known better, in my view.

Sorry to yet again clarify... The democractic vetting process did fail...although Daschle told the white house and fixed it, still he should have known better. When I wrote Republicans, I meant the fact that they have to be the loyal opposition. I think that if they think Tom Daschle is not qualified and there are questions about him, they ought to fillisbuster it if they think it is appropriate. As I said though, I think he will be confirmed based on the President's desire and how the Senate is. Although the Senate did turn on John Tower.....so there is precendence.
Let's see how it turns out.

This kind of bad judgment and hypocrisy is just chipping away at Obama's mystique, though. He promised change, but it looks like business as usual to me.
