Problem with health care bills
July 17th 2009 06:42
Let's hear Barack Obama explain how this is good for the country:
Let me get this straight -- Barack Obama and the Democrats want to pass a health care bill that will cost our essentially bankrupt country a trillion dollars or more over ten years. And now we find out that the bill will wind up increasing our long-term health care cost burden beyond what it would have been if we did nothing? I feel like we're in a bad Twilight Zone episode. We're careening over a cliff and Barack Obama has his foot pressed firmly on the gas. Can someone please pull the emergency brake?
Health care costs are a big problem -- SO WORK ON REDUCING COSTS. As I've mentioned previously, there are lots of ways to do just that. In the meantime, drop the idea of forcing everyone to buy coverage. Drop the notion of providing universal health care paid for by the government (i.e., the already overstretched taxpayers). Work on reducing the costs and you'll increase the % of people who can afford to get health insurance. At the same time, you'll increase the disposable income of folks who already have insurance. If you want to have some type of catastrophic plan for people who don't qualify for or can't afford health insurance, then do that through a public-private partnership or use the legislative avenue to facilitate such a plan in the private sector.
These health care plans are like bad pieces of fruit. The longer they stay on the table, the worse they stink. I guess we all know why the Democrats are so eager to get this done quickly.
The health care overhauls released to date would increase, not reduce, the burgeoning long-term health costs facing the government, Congressional Budget Office Director Douglas Elmendorf said Thursday.
That is not a message likely to sit well with congressional Democrats or the Obama administration
