A positive political post (part 1)

August 24th 2007 10:38
This blog -- my blog -- is known as angryelectorate.com. Based on that name alone, one would think that I am overly critical or exceedingly negative. In reality, I'm not. I'm actually a pretty positive person. I do admit, however, to being quite cynical when it comes to present-day politics.

With that being said, I'd like to try something a little different. I'm going to discuss what I like about the top three presidential candidates from each of the two major parties. Today, I'll talk about the Democrats. My next post will cover the Republicans.

Maybe I'll come back at some point with a post decrying the negatives of each candidate, but for now I'm going to focus on the positives -- as I see them.

Democrats:

Hillary Clinton: I think that she is intelligent and I think that she is a serious person who would fully study and understand all sides of an issue. I also think that she would have, at least in part, a poll-driven presidency. Some think that is a negative, but I think it's a good thing more often than not. Why shouldn't the president try to do what the people want?

Barack Obama: I believe that he would be a breath of fresh air in today's political climate. He's obviously articulate -- and I mean that in a good way. His style of speaking engenders hope and he presents a positive vision for the future. Additionally, I think he would challenge the lobbyist culture in Washington. He has already helped pass legislation that shines "sunlight" on it. Finally, he speaks effortlessly about his faith and how it has shaped him. He comes across as being very genuine about it.

John Edwards: He has a friendly and easygoing demeanor. Even if he disagrees with you, I think that he would do so without rancor. Also, at least in theory, I applaud his talk of the "two Americas". I think that resonates with a lot of people these days. They see and feel the difference between the "haves" and the "have not's". Finally, I like his personal story (his upbringing from rags to riches, his wife who is bravely battling cancer, and his family's struggle after losing their son).

So there you go -- something positive about each of the top Democratic candidates. And, best of all, this wasn't a difficult exercise. While I may not agree with the politics of these three candidates, each has traits that are admirable.

Next time, I'll focus on the top three Republican candidates. Until then...

Even through I consider myself a Republican, this was very well written

Thanks, ClassicReserve. I'm very much a conservative (although I eschew the "Republican" label). The Republicans had it all before the 2006 elections, but they failed to deliver in so many ways. They only have themselves to blame for being the minority party now.
